Welcome back cicadas

July 23, 2006

Today I was woken by the sound of cicadas. It has been a year and they’ve returned. Luckily my new apartment is situated farther from the park and any considerable number of trees. For me they are but an annual event that brings about loud screeching and panic attacks walking under and beside trees. It’s been raining much more than last year but I welcome every drop. Better the cooling drench of rain than the shower-inducing humidity. Short update today.

Can you post a new pic of a cicada if you can manage to capture one on digital celluloid? I want to shudder at their size again. I’m so glad we don’t have them here.

What? And risk getting one tangled in my hair? Nuh uh.

It’s so weird. Cicadas sing only during certain times of the day and in certain weather conditions.

Observations are qualitative and unverified. Kids, don’t quote this in your next science report.

They don’t sing when it’s raining. They don’t sing before noon. They sing early morning, but not before sunrise.

Do cicadas sing? Or just make noise? Don’t forget to mention about the seven years in the ground at nymph stage before becoming the full-blown noise-makers that they are. I saw one of those nymphs today at school, unfortunately since it was no longer in the cool ground, it had dried up.

Yeah, what a sad existence these little winged behemoths have. They spend forever in the ground, escape a dark childhood, make a rucus to attract other noisy mates, and then die by the end of summer.

Hmm I think I met people like that before…
