The Dress

November 23, 2005

Wow. Wedding dress companies are evil!

So here I am at this company waiting for the woman as she gets her hair done to try on some dresses. The lady helping us seems nice but after trying to sell us the merits of buying rather than renting (you get a stupid carrying bag if you buy a dress) I can’t help but despise her a little bit.

Our wedding package includes 88,000 yen for a rental at this place and I’m guessing the staff here works on commission. She keeps showing us stuff over the 88K. This lady is showing us nothing but expensive for-purchase dresses and when we look at rentals, she only showed us some pastel coloured dresses used to wed sows and goats. She completely ignored the other dresses that looked decent.

While looking at the catalog it seemed a bit convenient that only the more expensive dresses were on hand. Even on her list of what was available, she seemed to be picking and choosing. When I tried looking at the list she seemed to pull away (maybe this part is my imagination though). It’s not that I’m a cheapass. I’ll gladly pay extra for a dress the woman likes. I just hate feeling like I’m being scammed.

The lady in a dress I liked
Of the three dresses she tried on, this is my favorite.

When I was looking at tuxedos, the rental catalog had a few choices. I want black. I look like an idiot in white and I think wearing gray makes me look like a hotel porter. I want black. “I’m sorry, we don’t have black.” How can a place that rents tuxedos not have black tuxes? Maybe Blockbusters is out of “DVDs” too?

I do not look good in gray
May I help you with your bags ma’am?

In the end, we’ve decided not to go with this place because it sucks. I’m going to wear a new suit instead of a tux and get a nice shirt, tie, vest, and shoes instead. The lady’s coworker is going to take her to see some dresses elsewhere. We ended up using this place to just try stuff on and get ideas. The one redeeming thing about this place is that they really pamper you while you’re in their premises.

I guess this whole industry is out to get your yen. It’s sad that businesses can try to take advantage of people during their time of celebration. That would be a great idea to make the world a better place: not for profit wedding planners and associated businesses.

Caveat emptor.

Yup those were black tuxes. Those were for sale.

I forgot to mention that she tried selling a tuxedo to me as well. It almost made sense. It would’ve cost about 38,000 to rent and to buy was about 58,000 - 20,000 extra. My thing though was that I really can’t see the next time I would need to wear a tuxedo (at my crowning of emperor of everything, I’ll be wearing a Hawaiian shirt).

The sales lady suggested that I buy the long tuxedo and afterwards have it cut down to suit size. I thought, what a waste of a perfectly good looking long tuxedo. Another stupid idea from the shitty sales lady.

Well that just about destroys any hope of you dressing up as the Penguin for Hallowe’en

Actually, an update. Yesterday we went to another place and found a dress and black tuxedo. We’re going to pay extra for this but the lady here was not pushy. She was kissing our ass but at least she wasn’t pushy and catered to our needs. In the end we ended up paying more than what we wanted to at the original place.

I will be a penguin after all!
